Misiones: Argentina

- Services and Information
Reddish land and waterfalls
Misiones is the second smallest province in Argentina, although its location turns it into one of the most privileged ones when it comes to geography. It is located in the coast of the country, sharing borders with Paraguay and Brazil. It is known by the reddish tone of its ground, due to the iron present on the rocks of the area.
Over 35% of the territory in the province is covered by subtropical jungle, which just keeps on adding value to this area. In spite of vegetation receeding more and more every year, due to indiscriminated tree felling by the hand of man, Misiones still has an important status in the country, being one of the privileged destinations chosen by Argentineans and foreigners.
When it comes to geography, Misiones is divided in five smaller regions, each of them has their own attractive for tourists. These regions are: aguas grandes (big water), selva (jungle), las flores (flowers), sierras centrales (main mountain range) and sur (south). In the last one you can find the San Ignacio Ruins, Patrimony of Humanity.
Besides its natural attractions, Misiones also features many celebrations of festivities that take place all over the year. Some of those traditional parties are the National Tea Party, the Orchid Festivity, the Yerba Mate Party and the National Inmigration Day.
- Attractions
In each of the five sub-regions found at Misiones, you can find touristic attractions, mainly nature-related ones, which are:
The Aguas Grandes zone is located in, perhaps, the most important attraction in Northern Argentina: the Iguazu Waterfalls, formed by 275 cascades that are up to 70 meters high. The falls are not the only destination in the area, and you can also visit the Birds Recuperation Center, for example, a sanctuary where wounded animals are recovered and sent back to their habitat after recuperation. In this sub-region you can also find an Ecomuseum, where you can see clay pieces over 300 years old. Because of its location, from here you can visit the Three Frontier spot, an obelisc constructed in 1903, from where you can see land that is part of Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay.
The Selva region also offers attractive destinations, such as the Mocona and San Pedro cascades, which have over three kilometers of waterfalls. In this sub-region, you can also visit the El Dorado department, where you can see yerba mate plantations; the most popular and traditional drink in Argentina.
In Las Sierras you can find waterfalls too, in places like Berrondo, one of the most beautiful spots in Misiones. Surrounded by native vegetation, there is modern infrastructure to receive tourist delegations, as well as a camping area. Other cascades in the mountains are Orquideas, Paca and Rosa Mística. You can also visit the Swedish Historical Museu, the Natural Science museum and the Mbotavi Natural Reserve, amongst other places.
The fourth region, called South, offers ruins: San Ignacio de Miní, Nuestra Señora de Loreto, Reducción de Santa Ana and Santa María La Mayor. All these ruins were ‘alive’ in colonial times, circa 1680, and were handed over to jesuit monks. After the monks were expelled from Argentinean –and South American- territory, the buildings were abandoned.
Finally, we review the Flores region, where you can see enourmous cascades. There, you can find Capiovi, a small city that is the home of German and Swiss immigrants, where you can see a small beach that is very popular in the summer. You can also visit the Granja Navidad (Christmas Farm), where people produce milk and honey, as well as other products. Other places of interest are the Archeological Museum and the “Raices” Museu, where you can see objects and utensiles that tell the story of the area.
