Fortress by the hill

Catamarca is located in Northern Argentina, by the border of Salta, Tucuman, Santiago del Estero, Cordoba and Chilean territory. It is a mountain zone, with altitudes over the 6800 meters, and pampa, where you can see salt mines and other geographic formations.

It gets its name from the quechua tongue, meaning “fortress by the hill”, referring to the location of the city. It is a place that has taken interest in tourism, so the hotel and gastronomic offer is varied. There are still constructions built during colonial times standing, surrounded by more modern architechture. One of the most important places to visit is the University, which is surrounded by many other cultural attractive destinations.

Being the province’s capital, Catamarca is surrounded by smaller towns, which add beauty to the main city. These are places you can go for a day or turn into a more-day vacation. Some of them are Choya, El Rodeo, Las Juntas, El Jumeal, San Isidro, San José, Santa María and La Caprina Ranch, amongst others.

In Catamarca, the city, you can do historical tourism if you visit the many museums dedicated to the history of the place, as well as craft centers and buildings that were constructed in colonial times. Churches and sanctuaries display a singular architechture, with Spanish influence, which keep heirlooms in their interior.

Catamarca bases its tourism activity in the main city. However, there are four touristic destinations of great importance: the Calchaquies Vallyes, where you can find what’s left of the yokavil culture; San Fernando del Valle, capital of the city and center of commercial and touristic activity in the area; Antofagasta de la Sierra, where geography will dazzle you; and Tinogasta, where you can enjoy wine tastings in one of the many wineries of the area.

Catamarca, the main city of the province, with its cultural activities and mixed influences from Europe and South America. You can walk around the city, do a bit of historical tourism, and travel to nearby towns where you can enjoy the best tourism equipment and beautiful sceneries that include mountains and valleys.

Nearby Catamarca, you can find Antofagasta de la Sierra and Tinogasta, where you can go on excursions and visit vineyards. There you can learn about the wine making process and enjoy wine testings.

How to get there
By land, you take RN9 and RN60, then RP33, which ends in Catamarca. From Buenos Aires, buses leave daily to Catamarca. The same with flights.
