Jujuy: Argentina

- Services and Information
In the lands of the North
In Northern Argentina you can find Jujuy, right next to the frontier with Chile and Bolivia. Its a mountain area, known by the eternal presence of the Andes Mountainchain, which appears in different heights until you reach the San Francisco River.
Jujuy is divided in three geographically recognizable areas. The first one is knows as the Subandine Mountain Range, where the climate is humid and warm, unlike the two other areas: Oriental Cordillera and Puna, where the landscapes are different and wilder. Jujuy is known by its climatic diversity and for having important parks and national reserves.
The province is divided in five important cities: Humahuaca, La Quiaca, Purnamarca, Tilcara and San Salvador de Jujuy, the capital. In them you can enjoy all kinds of natural activities, especially in the Calilegua National Park, Laguna de Pozuelos National Reserve and in Quebrada de Humahuaca, which was named Natural and Cultural Patrimony of Humanity in 2003, by UNESCO.
Besides Quebrada de Humahuaca, in Jujuy there are other places to visit, such as Puna in Quiaca, the valleys in San Salvador de Jujuy and Yunga, the capital. These smaller cities or towns show an extraordinary beauty with a mixture of styles, similar to other countries colonized by europeans, which have open their doors to modernity once the founders started building their own families and homes.
Other important places for tourists are the Tilcara Pucará, a stone-built fortification of pre-Colombus times; the Potrero de Yala reservation, only 27 Kms. away from the capital, and where you can see twelve different lagoons next to the Chañi hill; the towns of Purnamarca, Maimara, Iruya and Tumbaya, where you can see the oldest traditions in the area; and, finally, the monolite that marks the Capricorn Tropic.
