The path of the Incas

In the northwest of Argentina and about 1500 kilometers away from Buenos Aires, you can find the Humahuaca Ravine, a geographical landmark of 150 kilometeres of extension. Before Argentina got its independence, and in pre-Colombus time, this place was used as path by the Incas that traveled to the south of the continent, meaning that it was used by conquerors and expeditions on the way to the unknown lands of the south.

One of the most important landmarks near the Ravine is the Rio Grande (Big River), where you can see the most beautiful native flora and fauna. This place of exceptional beauty still shows vestiges of colonial times, with houses made of adobe and churches built in colonial style.

You can get to the touristic spot by car, as well as by buses that go into the area. The climate is moderate and agreeable, especially in the summer and near Rio Grande. You should take into consideration that in the Humahuaca area it rains more heavily in summertime than in winter, unlike the rest of the country.

The Humahuaca Ravine was declared Patrimony of Humanity by UNESCO in 2002.

Activities: Walks and horseback riding in the ravine itself as well as around the Rio Grande. Observation of flora and fauna. Picture taking.
Location: Humahuaca, in the province of Jujuy. Northeast of Argentina.
How to get there: From Buenos Aires: RN 9, RN 34, RN 9. There are local flights made to Jujuy, and you can continue your trip by land until you reach Humahuaca (126 km).
When to go: All year
Climate: Moderate. Sunny in summer, with irregular rain.
