- Services and Information
A place of traditions
Surrounded by a beautiful valley, Humahuaca is a small town named after the native tribe that used to live in the area, which made reference to an ancient folk tale of a cemetery of heads hidden in this place. The town had an enormous commercial importance during colonial times in the, then existing, Alto Peru.
Its houses were constructed in the old fashion way, with adobe walls and long halls. The town?s streets are long and narrow, ideal to walk on them, considering they are part of several touristic circuits in the Puna of Argentina.
Humahuaca is a small town that can be visited in a day, while you make the trip known as the Jujuy-Salta circuit. However, it is where the Humahuaca Carnival takes place. Every year, for eight days, thousands of people from all over the country come together to enjoy traditional music and food, while having a good time and getting to know traditions and craftwork.
The town features a complete tourist structure, with accomodations, travel agencies that organize excursions to historic and archeological places, gastronomic centers, museums and disbeaches of craftwork as well as folklor.
The civic center of the town can be visited in a morning, where you can see the history of the place through a series of monuments and museums, as well as important buildings ?such as the cathedral- in its surroundings.
