Cold Land
The Puna in Jujuy disbeaches wonderful landscapes. Miles of inexplored territory, which end at the frontier officially, but which continue until they meet the sky, sheltering guanacos and llamas.
The word ‘puna’ comes from the ancient quechua language and it means “cold land”. Because of its dry climate and umbearable cold weather at night, the vegetation in the area is scarse, although it’s enough to feed the animals living in the province.
It used to be part of the path used by the Inca people. To the south, it’s common to see people walking with their cattle (mainly sheep and guanacos), feeding them and enjoying the beauty of the zone. There are lagoons and salt lakes such as Laguna de Pozuelos, Vilama, Runtuyoc; as well as Canchari, Jama and Olaroz.
The Puna in Jujuy is of vital importance for history and archeology, considering that a number of petrogliphs and vestiges of ancient civilizations have been found in the area, some dating thousands of years ago. There are some descendants of the people who used to live in the Puna area, mainly of towns in Atacama known as Omaguaca and Chicha.
