Town of Virgin Ground

65 kilometers away from Jujuy you can fnd Purnamarca, a small town in the Northwest of Argentina, surrounded by multicolor hills right next to the river and ravine of the same name. It was named by the Aymara people, who gave the name of “Purnamarca” to the sector known as “town of virgin ground”.

It is another traditional town in the area, with construccions built in colonial times using adobe, a mixture of mud and straw. Today, Purnamarca offers a view to the past, with long and narrow streets, squares and monuments, museums and churches; it’s all part of the importance of the sector in the pre-Colombus and colonial times.

The criole sentiment is not only palpable in the old houses made of adobe, but in the 500 people who live in this small town. Several important celebrations take place there every year, such as Easter, living nativities, celebrations in honor of the dead, cult parties to the Pachamama (Mother Earth) and other rituals that are still alive, after thousands of years.

You can also see everyday life in Purnamarca, a place known for its wonderful surroundings, which can be visited in excursions that take place everyday, organized by travel agencies and the town’s council.

Attractions

You can visit the Humahuaca Ravine and Purnamarca, as well as Cerro Siete Colores (Seven Colors Hill). You can have walks and go on excursions to the nearby mountains and to Rio Grande.

In the city, you can visit the Town’s council office, one of the few still standing in the country; Santa Rosa de Lima church, right in front of the main square, the historical Algarrobo, craftwork fairs and archeological spots.
