The Silver Teacup

Magnificent hills welcome tourists to San Salvador de Jujuy, the main city of the Jujuy province, in the northwest of Argentina. It’s a town surrounded by mountains, mainly the Altos de Nieva, which end in deep cliffs formed by the Rio Grande and the Xibi-Xibi River.

Known as “the silver teacup”, San Salvador offers imponent and majestic mountain chains, which grow even taller once you get closer to the houses and rivers to the south. Even the colors change while you move, starting in copper tones by the hills and ending in the most amazing shades of blue and green in the water and the native vegetation.

There are about 180 thousand people living in Jujuy. They all come together when it’s time to celebrate important dates in the year, such as the carnival and religious celebrations, mostly. People come down from the hills in nearby neighborhoods, wearing typical customs and playing music with traditional instruments.

In spite of being a traditional city, still striving to keep alive a sense of community, San Salvador de Jujuy has been able to introduce certain elements of modernity to everyday life, such as transportation, hotels and restaurants.
