Cafayate is located in the middle of the Calchaquies Valley, known internationally for its wonderful wine cellars, its climate and the beauty of its surroundings. Three provinces in Argentina come together in this area: Salta, Tucumán and Catamarca.
The city is also known as folklor’s landmark. Each February a special celebration takes place: the Serenade to Cafayate, the most important festivity in the north of Argentina and one of the most popular celebrations in th country. The serenade was first held in 1974 and each year since then, gathers poets, songwriters, artisans, musicians and dancers, who travel to Cafayate to celebrate the end of the summer season.
One of the main attractions of Cafayate is its wine cellars. Huge places welcome tourists, prepared to offer tastings of a series of wine recepies, from red wine to rosseau brands to white wine. They are all internationally reknown wines, which can only improve the taste of any bite you can have.
In downtown Cafayate is possible to walk around in what is known as historical tourism. It is recommended to check out the town’s square, the archeological museum, the Cathedral Nuestra Senora del Rosario (one of the three cathedrals in existance is South America built with more than three sections in its interior), and the San Isidro caverns and hill, where you can see paintings and enjoy the beautiful panoramic view of the city.

Visiting wine cellars, where you can taste different types of wine going from wed to white, never forgetting the rosseau brands. You can also do historical tourism in the Calchaquies Valley and in the city itself, visit museums that tell you a bit of the history of the area, where you can also see a permanent display of aborigin craftwork and weapons used by them to protect themselves from the attacks of the Inca Empire.
You can participate in the Serenade to Cafayate, the most popular celebration of the area, where –each February- thousands of people travel to the north of Argentina to exchange goods and see the artistic display that ends summer season and gives a warm welcome to the autumn one.

- How to get there

From Buenos Aires, Tucumán, Santiago del Estero and Córdoba: RN9, RN38, RP307 (Tucumán) and RN40. Buses from Buenos Aires and Salta leave daily to Cafayate. You can take a flight to Salta, where you can continue your trip until you reach Cafayate, by bus or car. It’s a 128 Kms ride.
