The garden of the Republic

Founded four hundred years ago, Tucuman is the main entrance in northern Argentina, next to the provinces of Jujuy, Salta, Catamarca, Santiago del Estero and La Rioja. The region also limits with Bolivia and Chile. It is the smallest province in the country, but also the more dense (59 inhabitants per squard feet).

Known as the garden of the republic, it shows a mixture of modern architechture and tradition, with buildings that were constructed in colonial times as well as others that have been built in recent years to attract more tourists and a better life style to its citizens.

Geography is another important ingredient if you visit Tucuman. There, you can find valleys and mountain ranges, high hills and beautiful roads, salar mines, deserts, jungles, cities, towns and aborigen ruins.

As a province, Tucuman offers all of this and more. Several touristic circuits have been defined there, separated by areas that include the Calchaquies Valleys, Las Yungas, Historical City, the Choromoros Valley and the South, including the town of Lules.

Attractions

Tucuman offers different destinations for tourists who enjoy natural beauty and comfor when traveling. Tafi del Valle, for example, is a wonderful place to see aborigen settlements, people who left their mark in the valleys and mountains of the area, while San Miguel de Tucuman, the capital of the province, offers more tradicional tourism venues, that include museums and old buildings as well as walks around the city.

You can also visit the Ruins of Quilmes, the last aborigin town still standing, built to keep attacks from Spanish conquerors at bay, a place filled with history and stories. Other nearby towns are San Miguel, Yerba Buena, San Javier, El Mollar and Angostura. They all feature beautiful landscapes and corners to visit.

How to get there

By land, from Buenos Aires, you take the RN9, which goes through Santiago del Estero. From that city you take a short-cut using the RN34, and then you take the RN9 to Tucuman.

From Buenos Aires, there are daily flights to the city.
