Services and Information

Mother of Cities

Santiago del Estero is a province in northern Argentina, and the main city of that province is called the same way. It is a beautiful city, with old constructions and natural landscapes, one of the oldest in the country, founded by the Spanish conquerors over three hundred years ago.

Surrounded by plains, in Santiago del Estero you leave behind the big mountains of the area, and the valley begins to take space, filled with life and color. There, you can find the most important touristic destination in the province, the Rio Hondo Thermal Waters, nearby the Rio Hondo town.

Rio Hondo Thermal Waters is an important touristic center, one of the most modern in the country, where people with reumatic afflictions go to, to get rest and treatments based on mineral water, herbs and other natural remedies. They are not the only ones who can enjoy the marvels of the center, and many do go just to enjoy the wonders of the water, to swim in it and enjoy one of the many saunas, as well as other treatments that take place in the open.

In Santiago del Estero you can also visit the Copo National Park, where native species are protected from harm and from extinction, such as anteaters and other native species recently discovered.

Finally, in the province there is a big following of religious tourism. You can visit over a dozen churches, temples, parishes and chapels, located all over Santiago del Estero and the towns nearby. Related activities to religion bring a lot of people from other provinces and countries to this area, people who travel there to pay tribute or honor to the saints, and to see the only replica of the holy shroud that exists in America.

Attractions

Santiago del Estero is one of the oldest cities in Argentina, so its cultural influence is quite important. Not only does it feature a great variety of architechture in its constructions, but also a great number of churches and parishes which increase people’s interest in religious tourism in the area.

Ecology is just as important in the province, which is in charge to maintain the Copo National Park, home of a delicate ecosystem protected by the government. Endangered species live together in thousands of hectares that are part of the park, some of which are native and in immediate danger of disappearing.

Nearby towns to Santigo del Estero are wonderful places to visit as well, they portray a simple beauty with typical places that survive away from big cities. To visit, you can go do Villa La Punta, Ojos de Agua and Sumampa, where you can visit the image of Nuestra Señora de la Consolación, patron of athletes.
